QUEER YOUTH IN CARE ADVOCACY PROJECT

VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

LGBTQI+ children and young people are over-represented in out-of-home care (foster, residential and kinship care) but there are no policy and program responses from government that recognise this and aim to ensure that these young people feel welcome, safe and included during their time in care. This advocacy project is working directly with young people, as well as with their case workers and the services established to support them, to identify the gaps and challenges facing this group, document examples of good practice, and describe for government the policy, administrative and programmatic changes that need to be made to ensure that the rights and needs of queer young people in care are understood and respected.
